a r t i f i c e: The artifice in my entry is transforming different facets of reality into works of art that have nothing to do with the original.
Description: This videos , is made out of still photographs to create a kaleidoscope of vision, events and portraits, representing the inside world of the ” Sofia City Art Gallery”. The public is allowed for the first time to follow the processes of exhibition consideration and design, the transformation of gallery space and the addition of new art works to the gallery’s collection. A part of an ordinary working day of every member of the staff is represented, the chief curator, the security guards, even the washing women. This work is an attempt at a look beyond exhibition halls, meaning to present gallery employees and the various aspects of their work.

a r t i f i c e: This multidisciplinary work mixing video with photography, documentary with experimental.
The project was represented as a video installation in the Sofia City Art gallery /April 2009/, where every member of the staff, has it’s own screen showing one of his ordinary working day. This is the short-film version of the project, the music is composed by the Bulgarian electronic music artist KiNK. Post production: Deyan Parouchev

Artist: Urban Belina

Category: Video

Description: Video is based on the occurrence of intervention in public space as part of Medeja Blossoming project directed by Saša Rakef on Patossofiranje festival in Smederevo. Envisioning mnemonic depiction, creation of memory through memorisation of fragmentary scenes, essential narration procedures follow non-linear time-line construction and repetitive images of short inserts, all being used with originally recorded soundscape material. The idea is to depict the fragmentary existence of contemporary individual and the irrational selection of memorised images in the context of image-based mass media society, the society of spectacle in which meaning has been hollowed out and perversely disembodied.

a r t i f i c e:The artifice of this form has been developed from a mistake, which often causes unexpected emergence of creative strategies. The mistake in this case has been, that my art partner, who had been filming the intervention in public space, is completely unskilled in camera handling and the result was a disastrous bumpy and shaky raw video material. After contemplating what can be done with such a piece I decided not to use it as archive material, but to rather connect it with other field of my art practice and to try to relate it with my research on the fragmentation of memory in information and image over-saturated contemporary reality. I had carefully selected sections of the video that have emotional value for me as one of the creators of this public intervention and combined manipulated pieces with anonymous heads, the head being dived and the ticking head. The first one actually belonging to art partner with whom we have devised this public intervention and the second one being mine. I perceive the finished piece as an intermingled collage of memories: of the physical memory of my art partner, of my long-term memory that is supported by emotional involvement and of the memory of mini-dv tape. The combination feeds the creative process of montage and results in rather chaotic, aggressive and fragmentary piece that is open to interpretations. Is it of female power? Is it of stereotypes? Is it of path? In circular, linear or multidimensional time? I like to open questions and stir certain irrational reactions regardless of the side they land on. And still, the question of what personal memory actually is remains open and will remain open in the crossovers of multiplied subjectivities.

‘Spaces for Interactivity’:

Each year, the Online Arts Festival will also pronounce its character with original categories to further stimulate imagination and creativity among young artists. The special featured section will accept entries under the category “Spaces for Interactivity”, further creating an opportunity for artists to explore collective games. The festival wants to further share creative uses of media, which stimulates the multiplicity of gaming ideas in urban spaces across Europe and the Mediterranean.

Urban playground as spaces for interaction are often misinterpreted as places of superficial engagement and popular culture practiced outside institutions. However gaming cultures have always motivated communities to share local knowledge and have introduced notions of participation in the urban landscape. By stimulating the presentation of traditional games and reinventing techniques for urban spaces, the festival entries hope to reflect artistry and resourcefulness.
